Recently Updated: CompTIA A+ 2009 Certification

The A+ certification, which is CompTIA’s entry-level program, has recently undergone an update to ensure that it remains current. The last time CompTIA updated the A+ certification was back in 2006. After examining the latest innovations and surveying the industry to understand the roles and responsibilities of today's entry-level computer technicians, CompTIA revamped the exams to match. Now, A+ candidates must pass not one, but two certification exams: Exam 220-701- A+ Essentials and Exam 220-702 A+ Practical Applications.

The A+ Essentials 2009 exam measures the candidate’s abilities in six domains: Hardware (27 percent of the exam), Troubleshooting, Repair, and Maintenance (20 percent of the exam), Operating System and Hardware (20 percent of the exam), Networking (15 percent of the exam), Security (8 percent of the exam), and Operational Procedure (10 percent of the exam).

The A+ Practical Applications 2009 exam covers the following four domains: Hardware (37 percent of the exam), Operating Systems (36 percent of the exam), Networking (15 percent of the exam), and Security (12 percent of the exam).

Though the new A+ certification program isn’t dramatically different than the 2006 program, it does cover new technologies such as Blu-ray, Bluetooth, SD cards, television tuner cards, DDR3, encryption, biometrics, authentication, and Windows Vista.
