Career Training Self-Study Misconceptions

Learning new computer skills and studying for IT certifications is a fact of life for IT and business professionals at all stages of their careers. Whether you need to master a new business skill or preparing for an IT certification exam, you have plenty of study sessions in your future. You also have plenty of distractions, all vying for your attention including work responsibilities, family members, and leisure activities. You may also have plenty of misconceptions about preparing for the certification exam.

Among the more common self-study misconceptions are:

  • Computer and career training courses are beyond your price range
  • Certification courses require extensive amounts of study time
  • Cramming is the best way to prepare for the certification exam
  • You're not smart enough to ace a certification exam
  • You're smart enough that you don't need to study as much

Price Myths – Busted!
Have you postponed furthering your career due to the cost of IT certification and career development tuition? Not only are the plenty of cost-effective alternatives to pricey courses at the local technical institute, your employer may have a reimbursement program in place that will pay for your training. If you're not currently employed, earning a certification is an investment in your future and could qualify you for higher paying jobs that were previously out of reach.

Time Myths – Busted!
Are you putting off career training because of a lack of time? Do you think that you need blocks of four, five, or even eight hours of free time in order to learn? You don't. In fact, the human brain needs time to process new information, making shorter study sessions extremely effective for real learning. Imagine watching a ten to fifteen minute video at lunch each day and mastering each of the exam's objectives, one video at a time. You can find the time!

Best of all, cramming is NOT recommended. While cramming before an exam may help in the short term, it's the short study sessions, repetition, and hands-on training that are essential to long term retention. With a good study program that incorporates these techniques, cramming is not necessary.

Brainpower Myths – Busted!
Whether you think you're not smart enough or too smart, your IQ has very little to do with your success in the exam room. Your study habits are what make the biggest difference. For example, if you study in a crowded, noisy environment and are subject to constant interruptions, it doesn't matter how smart you are, your study sessions won't be as effective as they would be in an environment more conducive to learning.
