Soft Skills Too Often Overlooked
Too often, companies train their employees focusing on software and computer skills- ignoring the important soft skills that are so vital to a company's success- skills like customer service, project management, and leadership. Career training in these skills translates into what really makes a company successful- customer satisfaction.
It seems that the general consensus in today's business world is that software and technical training are what matters most in succeeding in today's competitive marketplace. However, IT Training magazine reports that 96% of survey respondents attributed communication skills and interpersonal skills (soft skills) as the most main factor in achieving career success.
What are soft skills? They're not soft- in fact, they're essential. Soft skills are skills that effect how people interact with people. In general, soft skills are skills that aren't included in the traditional product/technology skills. Skills like effective communication, strategic thinking, and building upon customer relationships- these are all soft skills. The outcome of soft skills is often improved human relations and increased customer satisfaction.
After all, an employee may be thoroughly trained in the technology he or she is using- but what good are those skills if that same employee has no idea how to handle a customer complaint, or effectively handle an important project? In many situations, it's often the soft skills that matter the most in dealing with the day to day operations of a company.
Such skills are often the bottom line in a company because it's these skills that matter most to a customer. A customer usually has no idea what computer program you are using- but they appreciate when you complete a project beyond their expectations or resolve an issue quickly and effectively. A customer who receives great customer service, for example, is sure to keep coming back, and tell others about her positive experience. This is free advertisement- and it's how companies stand out amongst the competition.
Training in soft skills ensures that your employees gain the tools they need to make your company a success. While computer and technology training are key to a company's operations, it is the soft skills that matter most to your clients and customers. Soft skills like project management and customer service ensure that your business is performing at its highest capabilities. Investing in your employees is the best rout to success for your company- after all, a company is only as good as who's working for it.
