CompTIA Recognizes Evolving IT Security Concerns with Updated Security+ Exam
CompTIA announced that its Security+ certification exam has been updated to reflect changes in IT security. As a leading vendor-neutral certification provider, CompTIA periodically updates its certification programs to ensure that they're as current and relevant as possible. The Security+ exam last underwent a major update in 2008.
According to CompTIA's executive vice president of skills certification Terry Erdle, the exam emphasizes proactive security tasks such as designing network security to accommodate cloud computing and the related security issues. The exam focuses more heavily on security risk control and mitigation, virtualization, cloud computing, and forensics.
These changes also reflect a greater awareness and of IT security among organizations. In fact, CompTIA published a study in late 2010, Eighth Annual Global Information Security Trends, which shows that security's priority has increased from 35 percent in 2008 to 49 percent in 2010. This same study found that the demand for technical professionals with expertise in security continues to grow. Also revealing: organizations believe that having more staff members earn security certifications could improve computer security.
The CompTIA Security+ certification is vendor-neutral, equipping credential holders with security skills that can be applied across a broad range of applications, technologies, and platforms. The 2011 Security+ exam consists of the following domains: Network Security, Compliance and Operational Security, Threats and Vulnerabilities, Access Control and Identity Management, Cryptography, and Application, Data, and Host Security.
The new CompTIA Security+ exam is now available. Candidates may take either the 2008 exam or the 2011 exam until the 2008 exam officially retires on December 31, 2011.
