CompTIA Updates A+

After much speculation, CompTIA's updates to the A+ Essentials certification exam #220-701 and the A+ Practical Application exam # 220-702 are now official. The most notable changes are detailed below.

CompTIA A+ Essentials:

  • Domain 3.0 – Windows 7 Starter, Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate have been added to the list of operating systems. Note that Windows 7 is an addition, not a replacement. A+ candidates must still be knowledgeable in the other operating systems and their editions.
  • Objective 3.1 – This objective requires candidates to compare and contrast operating systems. Now, candidates must be knowledgeable in Windows 7 32-bit versus 64-bit, the Windows Assessment and Planning Toolkit, and Windows OS Upgrade Advisor.
  • Objective 3.2 – This objective now lists the use of libraries in Windows 7 under the Windows Explorer category. Candidates must be able to demonstrate the proper use of libraries when given a scenario.
  • Objective 3.3 – This objective requires candidates to explain and install the Windows operating system. It has been updated to include the User State Migration Tool.
  • Domain 4.0 / Objective 4.1 – Objective 4.1 under Domain 4.0 has been changed to include a sub-objective that addresses the differences between IPv4 versus IPv6 including length and convention differences.

CompTIA A+ Practical Application:

  • Domain 2.0 – Like the A+ Essentials exam, Windows 7 Starter, Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate have been added to the list of operating systems in the Practical Application exam. Note that Windows 7 is an addition, not a replacement. A+ candidates must still be knowledgeable in the other operating systems and their editions.
  • Objective 2.2 – Windows 7 has been added to this objective which requires candidates to be able to distinguish between Windows operating system directory structures.
  • Domain 4.0 / Objective 4.2 – Objective 4.2 under Domain 4.0 has been updated to include a sub-objective addressing Windows Vista and Windows 7 User Account Control.
