Give Your Career a Jump Start

It can be all too easy for IT workers to get into a sort of comfort zone, that zone where they are comfortable but no longer challenged. Working with the same technologies and the same products day after day may get the job done, but it can be deadly boring as well. This boredom can lead to a lack of enthusiasm for a once vibrant IT career.

If your IT career needs a jump start, there are many ways to accomplish this important goal. The first step, of course, is to determine if you are in a permanent rut or simply experiencing a temporary decline in job satisfaction. Chances are you are spinning your wheels at your current job if:

  • You don't remember the last time you learned something new on the job
  • You see little or no opportunity to advance in your career
  • You have asked your supervisor for more responsibility without results
  • Your employer does not offer training or cover educational expenses

Before you start looking for another job and what you hope will be a greener pasture, it is important to look for other solutions, and to ensure that you have truly explored all avenues with your current employer. For instance, if you have gotten nowhere with your current boss, perhaps it is a good idea to look for job openings in another department, or even another corporate office.

It is also a good idea to look for ways to improve your skills. If your current company truly offers no educational opportunities and you lack the money for additional training, consider looking around for volunteer opportunities that will allow you to work with different technologies. Volunteer opportunities abound, and volunteering will give you a real sense of satisfaction as well as some important new job skills. In addition, once your employer finds out about your new skills and your volunteer spirit, they may be more accommodating with future requests for additional training.

In addition to these additional opportunism, it is important to look at your own attitude as something that could be holding you back. If you show a lack of enthusiasm for your job, and spend each day dreaming of the weekend, chances are others will pick up on that and make a mental note of it. Even if it is hard to show enthusiasm when doing the same old tasks, look for ways to improve your job and your level of job satisfaction. Attitude means a great deal in the work world, and a change of attitude just may net you the new opportunity you have been looking for.

Taking advantage of opportunities to meet others within the company, including not only other technical staff but senior management as well, can also provide a real boost to a flagging career. Whether at the company barbecue or the office Christmas party, it is important to take the time to meet with senior management and get your name and your face out there. This type of internal networking can do wonders for your career, especially if your front line supervisor and manager show no interest in helping you advance your career. Getting the attention of management can help the company to see your true worth and keep you from moving on.

Of course it may be that despite your best efforts you are getting nowhere, and in that case moving on may make sense. If you have truly exhausted all opportunities and still run up against a brick wall, it may be time to move on. In this case, it pays to start networking with other IT professionals, both in person and on the Internet, in order to get a feel for the job opportunities that exist and how to best take advantage of them. It can be difficult to leave a long time employer and a steady job, but there are times that it is truly the right move to make.

Of course it pays to prepare thoroughly before making such an important move, and one of the most important areas of that preparation will be the securing of the training and certifications you will need to be an attractive job candidate. If it has been some time since you last updated your skills, a new certification or two can make all the difference in the world.
