It's often hard to imagine that in this day and age, many people still find it hard to work with computers. A lot of those from older generations that didn't grow up with such technology find that computers and working with them can be quite intimidating. However, once they finally get over that initial fear of computer, learning the computer and it's many aspects and programs becomes quite simple.

Learning the computer is like learning how to ride a bike. With enough practice, you can become a professional (or at least be able to write documents, send emails and use the Internet). There are many ways to learn how to use a computer. There are many books that are a beginners guide to computers, as well as courses, both offsite and via the Internet, that teach those not familiar with computers how to start working with them.

First off, a computer is an electronic device that manipulates information or "data." It has the ability to store, retrieve, and process data. You can use a computer to type documents, send email, and surf the Internet. You can also use it to handle spreadsheets, accounting, database management, presentations, games, and more. It is made up of four essential parts: the system unit, monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

An operating systemIs the most important software that runs on a computer since it performs many essential tasks for your computer. Software is any set of instructions that performs some task on a computer. Basically, an operating system controls the memory needed for computer processes, manages disk space, controls peripheral devices, and allows you to communicate with the computer without knowing exactly how a computer works. Without an operating system, a computer is useless.

There are two types of computers: a desktop that sits on a desk and cannot be moved anywhere and a laptop computer that can easily travel with you for working on the go. A desktop computer has many slots in the back of it for various things. Since each computer is different, depending on if you get a PC or Mac, the components in the back of it will vary. However, there are certain features you can expect to find on most desktop computers. Being familiar with the names of each and how they are commonly used will help you when the time comes for you to connect that new printer, mouse, digital camera, or other device.

The basic parts of a laptop computer are the screen, keyboard, touchpad, speakers, battery, and AC adaptor. Beyond these basic parts are the hardware items located inside the laptop, and the peripherals, which are optional pieces of hardware that enables the computer to accomplish additional tasks.

The most used and popular programs that everybody uses one time or another are Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Word allows you to create text documents, while Excel is a popular spreadsheet program. PowerPoint is a presentation program that allows you to make visual slides for just about any occasion. Learning this programs are best when taking a course, such as K Alliance's elearning courses that allow you to learn from a CD you easily insert into your computer. You will follow simple instructional sessions that detail how to use the various programs.
