Microsoft BizTalk's RFID Mobile Features
Microsoft BizTalk RFID Mobile is a platform for the creation of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) mobile applications through the BizTalk Server 2006 R2, BizTalk 2009, and other related products. Combining RFID mobile technologies with the power of BizTalk makes it possible to extend business processes to mobile applications such as Windows CD and Windows Mobile 5.0.
RFID tags are used for close range wireless tracking, often for security or inventory control purposes. According to a Microsoft press release, BizTalk Mobile RFID solutions on the new platform have already benefited companies such as Rite Care Pharmacy. Rite Care Pharmacy has been able to cut turnaround times and reduce warehouse space requirements in half.
As the RFID technology continues its evolution, new uses will emerge. In the meantime, RFID standards such as Tag Data Translator (TDT), Low Level Reader Protocol (LLRP), and Electronic Protocol Code (EPC) have been developed. Microsoft incorporates these standards in the BizTalk RFID Standards Pack.
Additional RFID Mobile features include device management and offline processing features, PowerShell support, and RFID monitoring via the Systems Center Operations Manager 2007. Customers of Microsoft BizTalk Server with Software Assurance have access to BizTalk RFID Mobile at no additional costs. However, Microsoft training is recommended in order to get the most out of the technology offered.
The RFID Mobile features of BizTalk Server are an integral part of Microsoft's long-term strategy aimed at connected enterprises. Integration and connectivity between platforms, and now RFID mobile devices, is possible with BizTalk technology. By including RFID and business to business capabilities, the possibilities are virtually limitless. With this technology a scalable, end-to-end supply management system and mobile RFID asset tracking solution can be designed in a matter of days, not months or years!
Microsoft is committed to continuing down the path toward enterprise connectivity with plans for future releases of BizTalk Server already in the works. Future features will build on the groundwork already laid with B2B enhancements, real-time business event visibility, developer productivity enhancements, improvements in low-latency messaging, enterprise-level device management, cross-enterprise asset tracking, and continued integration with Visual Studio, Windows Server, and the .NET Framework as these platforms are further developed. BizTalk Server 2009 is the latest generation of a long line of BizTalk products. Expect further enhancements every two years from Microsoft.
It's recommended that you have at least an MCTS certification for working with BizTalk and implementing its solutions. The technology is powerful indeed. Harness that power by getting the skills that you need to put RFID technology to work for you.
