SharePoint Server 2010 Has Arrived

After much anticipation, SharePoint Server 2010 arrived in 2010 as promised. Invitation-only beta testers got the first peek. By May 2010, SharePoint 2010 had been officially launched, bringing with it new tools and capabilities.

The SharePoint 2010 product is available in three editions: SharePoint Foundation 2010, SharePoint Server 2010 Standard, and SharePoint Server 2010 Enterprise. Among the changes are:

• Inclusion of the Office Ribbon
• The inclusion of "Silverlight Web Part" which allows for Silverlight applications
• Web Edit features
• "Rich Theming" for skinning SharePoint sites
• Document management features
• Simple master pages for easier site design
• Improved search features

At its core, the new SharePoint Server 2010 blends messaging, collaboration, document and Web content management, and publishing into one server. Like other servers, SharePoint Server exists on either a server farm or central server and is accessed by users. In this case, SharePoint Server is accessed either via a Web browser or from Microsoft Office products.

Major capacities include: Sites, Communities, Composites, Content, Insights, and Search. Features include: close integration with Microsoft Office 2007 and above, Enterprise Search, Business Continuity Service (BCS), public and private "MySites," and improved accessibility.

SharePoint Server is built on the ASP.NET Framework and only runs on Windows Server (64-bit only) with ASP.NET Framework 3.5 and SQL Server/SQL Server Express databases. SharePoint Server provides a complete infrastructure for business website creation and management. SharePoint is commonly used to create both Web sites as well as intranet sites such as team sites, portals, wikis, and blogs. It even includes a social networking component, MySites, and tools called "composites" for creating "do it yourself" business solutions without creating code.
