Out with the Books - In with the Software

The books and IT training you received certainly prepared you with the knowledge that you will be tested on. However, practice exams and testing software go beyond simple facts. With software installed on your computer, you can experience the test. Out of time limits give a sense of the pace that you need to use in the exam room. After all, if you run out of time, all of the questions that you failed to answer will be counted against you - even if you have the knowledge needed to answer them correctly.

The time limit is but one of the crucial features of exam prep software. Another feature is the test itself. Testing formats are tricky to get used to. One exam may use a multiple choice format while another relies on true and false questions or fill in the blank questions. By practicing using a practice exam, you'll become more comfortable with the test, out of time limits, and the format of the questions.

Practice exams also give you a sense of what types of questions will be asked on the real test. Outright explanations are usually given explaining the answer which further reinforces your studies and better prepares you for the real thing. While the questions are not identical to the real exam's questions, you'll experience similar challenges and get a realistic sense of how the exam might be weighted toward certain topics.

Back to the Books

After completing the practice test, out goes the software and back come the books. Why go back to the books? Practice exams show you your weaknesses and provide you with an excellent opportunity to go back and strengthen these areas. Go back and focus on learning the answers to the questions that you answered incorrectly on the practice test. Outside distractions should be kept to a minimum as you go back and master the topics.

Once you've honed your skills, get your practice testout once again and retest. Most practice exam software rotates questions so that your next test will be a brand new learning and testing opportunity. Take the test several times, making sure to pay attention to testout of time limits, until you are completely ready to take your real exam. By then, not only will you have strengthened any weak areas, you will also be completely comfortable with the test environment and format.
