Three Notable Learning Delivery Trends

As technology and learning systems continue their evolution, it's inevitable that new trends will emerge. Among the more notable trends to watch are: the integration of tablet PCs into learning environments, social collaboration, and the relevance and "fidelity" of the learning experience.

The iPad as a Learning Hub

Apple's iPad has taken the world by storm – for good reason. This portable device puts information in your hands, it's extremely easy to use, and it's capable of just about anything you can imagine. Instructional designers are imagining all types of learning delivery applications for the iPad. While many students access courses from individual computers, others are using their iPads to participate. Companies are also setting up iPad "kiosks," enabling multiple users to access the training from a single, well placed iPad.

Social Collaboration

Social collaboration and Web 2.0 tools are becoming widely adopted by individuals and the learning industry alike, making them a natural choice for integration into learning environments. Among the more popular social collaboration and Web 2.0 tools making their way into distance learning are: instant messaging, Web conferencing, file sharing, Skype, wikis, blogs, discussion tools, and other collaboration tools such as SharePoint and Google Docs.

Relevance and "Fidelity"

In addition to technologically inspired trends, a greater emphasis is being placed on the relevance, or "fidelity" as the industry likes to call it, of the training. Managers want their employees to focus on learning skills, techniques, and knowledge that is directly relevant to their job roles. In other words, managers want learning that applies to "real world" job scenarios. For example, business modeling elements that allow learners to make a series of decisions, see the consequences of those decisions, and solve problems relevant to their daily job roles are becoming more popular because they add fidelity to the learning.

Learning delivery continues to evolve, taking today's technological innovations and applying them in innovative, relevant ways.
