The Transition Path for a MCDBA to MCITP Database Administrator
If you're a current MCDBA who's concerned about the new generation MCITP certification program and how it will affect you rest assured that there's a transition path that will get you to the professional level. The MCITP Database Administrator is set to be the premier credential for database server administrators so it's important that you pursue this certification or risk falling behind. By holding this certification, you are proving to potential employers and your peers that you have the expertise to handle enterprise business solutions.
For most MCITP Database Administrator candidates, in-depth Microsoft MCITP training and the passing of three certification exams are required. However, as a current MCDBA, you can earn your MCITP certification by following the transition path that Microsoft has put into place for professionals such as yourself.
While Microsoft MCITP training is still a good idea, you will only need to pass two certification exams. Either way, you will need to pass the MCTS exam 70-431: TS: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Implementation and Maintenance. After earning the MCTS and passing the exam, you will then need to take the exam 70-447: UPGRADE: MCDBA Skills to MCITP Database Administrator by Using Microsoft SQL Server 2005.
If you were starting from scratch, you would have to pass the MCTS exam as well as two additional PRO series exams (70-443 and 70-444).
While one less exam may not seem like much, if you think about the required training for each exam as well as the expenses involved, it is indeed a big deal. If you already have most of the skills, it doesn't make sense not to take the transition path and convert your MCDBA to the MCITP.
Remember, after you've earned your new credential you will need to refresh it in just three year's time.
