Database Administrator

The job functions of the database administrator, also sometimes called a database developer, is to manage information which is critical to the success of businesses and organizations both large and small. These IT professionals have the training and knowledge they need to determine which data to store, how to effectively store and preserve that data, and how to provide that data in a manner which addresses the critical business needs of the organization.
Some of the most critical duties of the database administrator include installing and maintaining databases for the organization or business, as well as evaluating the day to day performance of those databases. Database administrators will typically possess advanced knowledge of the Structured Query Language, also known as SQL, as well as the ability to plan the structure and design of the database using such tools as the entity relationship diagram, and the creation of database objects, including tables, forms and views. Database administrators are also typically responsible for implementing security procedures and designing the database to ensure that only valid data is entered into the database.
In addition to strong technical skills, database administrators should possess strong interpersonal skills, as a big part of their job will be interfacing with various departmental personnel to assess needs and evaluate the performance of the finished databases. A strong business sense is critical to success as well, including the ability to effectively manage workflow and understand how the databases he or she designs solve critical business problems and provide cost effective solutions.
As with other IT positions, the salary level of a database administrator will depend on a number of factors, including local market conditions, the individual's level of experience, training and competency and the role of the database administrator within the organization. Many talented database administrators are able to attain salaries of $70,000 or even more.
