In “Project Fundamentals
and Initiation'' training program, you will
learn about the fundamentals of project management
as it applies to information technology. This
training program also covers such areas as the
life cycle of projects, typical project processes,
project initiation, and scope management.

Training Audience
The target audience for this
training program is individuals with six months
previous experience in an IT project-intensive
environment or six months experience managing
IT projects.

Training Objectives
Unit 1: Know the Basics
(1 - 1.5 hours)
- Identify benefits of project
management.
- Identify the triple constraints.
- Identify guidelines for determining
the project environment.
- Identify guidelines for implementing
the typical phases of a project life cycle.
- Identify the project context.
- Simulation Overview: In the
simulation at the end of this unit, you will
meet with Dave Spencer, Project Sponsor, and
Cindy Becker, Lead Software Engineer, to conduct
a project phase review at the end of the development
phase of a project. You need to balance the
triple constraint of time, cost, and quality
for this project.
Unit 2: Project Participants
and Processes (1 - 1.5 hours)
- Identify necessary skills
for effective project management.
- Identify how to manage stakeholders’
needs and requirements.
- Identify how to determine
project success criteria.
- Identify guidelines for implementing
the five project management processes.
- Simulation Overview: In the
simulation at the end of this unit, you will
meet with Cindy Becker, Lead Software Engineer,
Kathy Jackson, Junior Software Engineer, and
Aaron Johnson, Software Programmer, all members
of your current project team. You need to
effectively use your project management skills
to manage the problems occurring in this project.
You also need to meet the requirements of
the stakeholders.
Unit 3: Project Selection
and Initiation (1 - 1.5 hours)
- Identify the components of
a project charter.
- Identify guidelines for carrying
out a SWOT analysis.
- Identify models to use for
project selection.
- Identify the components of
a scope document.
- Identify guidelines for obtaining
stakeholder consensus and approval of the
scope document.
- Simulation Overview: In the
simulation at the end of this unit, you will
meet with Cindy Becker, Lead Software Engineer,
and Aaron Johnson, Software Programmer, to
perform a SWOT analysis for a new Icon International
project. Later in the simulation, you will
meet with Dave Spencer, Project Sponsor, and
Ronald Spear, IT Operations Manager, to persuade
them to give the project the go-ahead.
