Courseware Objectives

Students will be able to list key features of the Linux operating system, advantages to using Linux, and discuss the common uses of Linux.

Students will be able to install Fedora Core 2 as well as describe the common CPUs, physical memory, disk drives, motherboards, peripherals, video adapter cards, monitors, and input devices like keyboards, and mice. They will have all the hardware and software information required to install Linux.

Students will understand Filesystem Hierarchy Standard. The will be able to use standard commands for file and directory management, they will be able to find files and directories, create linked files, modify files and directory ownerships, change file and directory permissions, apply special file and directory permissions, and identify default permissions created in files and directories.

They will learn how to install and configure SCSI devices, identify the default IRQs, I/O addresses, and DMAs, explain using Plug-and-Play for assigning configuration to peripheral devices, and have a basic understanding of fault-tolerant disk systems and RAID configurations. Students will know the steps for installing Linux from source files on hard disks or network servers. They will create kickstart files and troubleshoot the Linux installation process.

Other abilities include redirecting the input and output of a command, identifying, manipulating, creating, and exporting shell variables, editing environment files for creation of variables, understanding, creating and executing shell scripts, using common decision constructs in shell scripts and using and customizing the “BASH” shell command history feature.

Successful students will know the major steps needed for booting a Linux system, how to configure the LILO and GRUB boot loaders, be able to dual boot Linux with Windows operating system, have an understanding about how the init daemon initializes the system when booting, and know about runlevels.

GUI components such as X Windows, window managers, and desktop environments will be understood. Students will be able to discuss common window managers and desktop environments. They'll know how to configure X Windows using various utilities, how to start and stop an X server and how to use the command line to run X applications.
