Systems Engineer

Also know as lead systems analysts or network engineers, the systems engineer is responsible for managing the network, overseeing the development of hybrid software, web products, hardware solutions and other aspects of the network and systems environment. The products developed may be used in a variety of ways, including propriety systems, combination systems and standard systems. The solutions provided may run on PC equipment, servers, handheld devices and a variety of other hardware.

The systems engineer may also be responsible for the management of the business cycle required to produce resilient and cost effective software, hardware and web enabled applications, including everything from the specification and design phase to the coding, testing and maintenance of the agreed upon solution. Given the increasing complexity of modern software and hardware, qualified and competent systems engineers are expected to remain in high demand, and able to command high salaries, for some time to come.

As the systems engineer gains additional knowledge, skills and experience, he or she may wish to transition into other positions within the IT field, including network administrator, database administrator, systems administrator or project manager.

The salaries enjoyed by systems engineers will vary according to local market conditions and other factors, but highly qualified, experienced and talented systems engineers can attain salary levels of $80,000 and more per year.
